Sizewell Nuclear Power Station

Challenge: Sizewell workers were being compromised when accessing steam generator shielded areas for component maintenance, including Sludge Lancing, a process that involves reaching through a “hand hole” opening on the side of the generator.

Solution: NPO created five overlapping vertical shield segments that easily separate for minimal access between segments.  Because the segments overlap, the specialized lead blankets tend to move front to back, offering highly effective shielding (see lower right photo).

Results: Component maintenance, including sludge lancing, is now conducted without significantly compromising the shielding and the workers.
