Palisades Nuclear Generating Station

Challenge: For their Shutdown Cooling Heat Exchanger (HX), Palisades only had temporary, partial lead blanket shielding, resulting in higher than acceptable general area dose.

Solution: NPO worked with Palisades to create a seismically qualified shield for their heat exchanger, providing protection for workers in adjacent areas.  This needed to be delivered through the water tight door shown on opposite page.  The use of Grinnell Struts connected to an adjacent wall is critical to the seismic qualification.  In areas where access was required, we created high temperature, removable lead blanket shield panels.
