Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant

Challenge: To protect against the high dose from their regenerative heat exchanger, the Indian Point plant was using water shields.  These shields took up more space than higher density lead, were cumbersome to move and did not provide full coverage.

Solution: Together, NPO and Indian Point devised a track-mounted permanent shielding system with lead panels that are stored in a seismically-qualified vertical “closet” during operation.  During an outage, the stainless steel lead-filled articulating panels roll out in front of the heat exchanger and lock together on the permanent track.

Results: Workers receive significantly lower dose during installation, in general areas and when adjacent to the regenerative heat exchanger.
