Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs)

Challenge: BWRs needed to reduce dose associated with the replacement of the extremely “hot” impeller used in the reactor cavity cleanup pump.

Solution: NPO worked with BWR owners to create a transportable shielded containment box with an integral impeller puller where the pump shaft housing and impeller are installed in the box.  Within a 3 inch (7.6 cm) transfer shield, the housing is positioned so that the integral puller removes the impeller, which then separates from the box cart and is moved for disposal.   

Results:  Workers now receive minimal dose during impeller replacement.
