Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs)

Challenge:  BWRs wanted to reduce dose exposure when removing the In Core Radiation Monitor (IRM) cable.

Solution: Together, BWR owners and NPO designed a transporter cart and separate shielded cable puller that would directly pull and shield the cable while rolling it onto a removable reel.  These systems can be manually operated or electrically driven with a remote control.

Results:  The 4 inches (10.2 cm) of lead shielding reduces radiation transmission by a factor of 100 to 150, saving a significant amount of potential dose during the process.
